The workshop in detail

  • In this engaging workshop with Hannah, you'll learn the basics of mosaic art and create your own unique mosaic plate or tray. Perfect for beginners, this hands-on experience will take you step-by-step through the entire process, ensuring you leave with a beautiful finished piece.

The workshop begins with Hannah guiding you through the initial stages of finding inspiration for your mosaic. You'll learn how to translate your ideas into a clear design by sketching out your vision. Once your design is in place, you'll explore how to simplify your drawing to make it suitable for mosaic and ensure it translates well onto tiles.

Next, you'll dive into the practical side of choosing and preparing your tools and materials. Hannah will show you how to choose the perfect colour palette and help you combine different shades and tones to create a cohesive and visually appealing design. Then, using ceramic tiles and tile cutters, you'll learn how to cut the tiles into different shapes and sizes to fit your design and give your mosaic its distinctive look.

Once your tiles are ready, it's time to start assembling. You'll carefully glue the tiles onto your tray or plate, piece by piece, following your design. Finally, you'll learn how to mix and apply grout to fill the spaces between the tiles to hold everything in place and give your mosaic its finished, polished look.

A special feature of this workshop is the use of recycled ceramic tiles, often sourced from the remnants of home renovations. Not only will you be creating something beautiful, but you'll also be working with sustainable materials, adding an eco-friendly touch to your project. Each participant will be able to personalise their mosaic, adjusting the complexity of the design to suit their skill level, making the workshop suitable for everyone from beginners to those with some creative experience.

Throughout the session, Hannah's guidance will ensure a relaxed and mindful environment, offering a break from the everyday while exploring your creativity. By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with a stunning piece of mosaic and a new appreciation for this timeless craft!

Note: Drinks will be available during the workshop to enhance this unique experience.

    Meet Hannah

    Fibre artist

Hannah Emerson is the talented fiber artist behind Tethered Twine. With a passion for creating beautiful, tangible pieces, Hannah has been a creative soul since childhood. Her love for drawing, painting and creating friendship bracelets paved the way for her artistic journey.

After obtaining degrees in Psychology and Fine Arts, Hannah's interests in macrame, weaving and crochet blossomed. She began creating stunning wall hangings that eventually led her to sell her pieces online in 2019. But that's not all, Hannah is also a data analyst, balancing her time between work and her passion.

Hannah's cozy shared atelier is where the magic happens. She's always eager to teach and share her knowledge with anyone who wants to learn. It's no surprise that she settled in Amsterdam after coming as a fille au pair for a gap year in 2010.

In recent years, Hannah has found joy in teaching workshops to share her knowledge and expertise with others. Her love for teaching is just as strong as her passion for creating, and she will be glad to welcome you at one of her workshops.
