The workshop in detail

  • Over the course of two comprehensive days, 4 hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday, Sofia hosts a workshop exploring the art of creating yarn on a drop drop spindle.

These sessions invite participants to master the art of preparing the fleece by carding and combing, to spin threads and ply them to various forms of yar.

Attendees will begin by learning how to sort and wash fleece, ensuring the material is primed for spinning.

Following this, the participants will be introduced to carding and blending fibres. Sofia will guide attendees through the technique, fostering an understanding of how to prepare the fibre before it meets the spindle.

The heart of the workshop lies in the act of spinning. This not only instils a deeper understanding of the craft but also allows for a tactile and rewarding experience.

Furthermore, the art of plying – twisting multiple strands of spun fibre together for thickness and strength – is explored, revealing the multitude of ways yarn can be finished.

Each participant will leave the class not just enriched with knowledge but also with a tangible momento of their newfound skills: a sample of their hand-spun yarn.
