The workshop in detail

  • 2h30
  • 3 to 4 participants
  • 15 years min.
  • Discover the delicate art of slab-built pottery in a workshop designed to introduce participants to the intricate techniques of creating with clay.

Over the course of three hours, Rachel will guide attendees through the process of rolling slabs of clay and mastering the art of decoration with coloured slips.

Each participant will have the opportunity to design and form their own slab-built water jug, learning to embellish their piece with textures, stamps and carvings under Rachel's expert instruction.

This workshop provides a genuine immersion into the world of pottery, conducted within Rachel's contemporary studio, which is equipped with the latest in ceramic tools and technology. Here, in a small group of up to four students, the atmosphere is ripe for creativity and individual artistic growth. This intimate group size is key to ensuring a personalised learning experience with heightened interaction between the teacher and each student.

In the final stages of creation, participants will select a glaze from the studio's curated range to complete their slab-built water jug. The piece will undergo two firings in an electric kiln, reaching the temperature of 1260 degrees, ensuring the transformation from clay to a finished water jug. Finished works will be available for collection from the studio after three weeks, or they can be conveniently posted for £6.00.

Participants will be provided with all necessary materials including a range of clays, an array of tools for shaping and decorating, slips for colouring, and glazes for finishing, as well as an apron.
