The workshop in detail

  • 2h30
  • 2 to 8 participants
  • 15 years min.
  • In a 2.5-hour workshop, hosted by Kira, participants discover the art of Kintsugi. This workshop offers an opportunity to explore the ancient Japanese craft of repairing broken objects, not just as a form of restoration but as a celebration of their imperfections and history.

The session begins with an introduction to Kira, providing insights into her expertise and passion for Kintsugi.

Attendees will be provided a broken pot salvaged from local ceramic studios, hand selected by Kira, which will be a surprise for every guest.

The core of the workshop is learning the Kintsugi technique. Kira guides participants through the process of piecing their broken items back together. The initial stage involves using epoxy to adhere the pieces, a modern adaptation of the traditional lacquer used in Kintsugi. Participants then learn how to carefully remove any excess material and repaint over the cracks with epoxy and then finally a dusting silver powder to reveal the repairs they have made. For those desiring an extra touch of luxury, there is an option to upgrade to genuine gold, enhancing the aesthetic and value of their piece.

Participants take home their restored item on the same day.

    Meet Kira

    Kintsugi artist

Kira, an artisan with a unique blend of skills, has been practising the ancient art of Kintsugi for six years. Her journey into this craft was a shift from her background in design, marking a transition that brought together her creative flair and a newfound passion for restoration.

Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with precious metals, is where Kira expertise truly shines. Her approach to this art form is not only creative but also deeply rooted in sustainability. She utilises actual precious metals in the restoration process, adding a touch of luxury and durability to each piece. Moreover, Kira has a special focus on reviving 'forgotten' pieces - items that were crafted but never collected, giving them a new lease of life and preserving their hidden stories.

Described as creative, fun, knowledgeable, and warm, Kira embodies these qualities in her work and interactions. She enjoys meeting new people and is passionate about sharing the history and philosophy of Kintsugi. For Kira , it's not just about repairing objects but celebrating their journey and honouring their history instead of erasing it.

Her workshops are more than just learning sessions; they are immersive experiences where participants are inspired to create and appreciate the beauty in imperfection.

Booked to do this with my Partner for Valentine's Day, unfortunately I got sick and we could not attend as planned. As a result we were completely accommodated and the date was kindly rearranged to a new date that suited us both. We had a class for just the two of us and it was fantastic. We had a great time learning about the history which helped us to understand the process and enjoy what we were doing even more. The instruction was great and she was very patient with the both of us who are not the most artistic people in the world, and we were both very happy with the lovely pieces of art we came away with. All in all it was great fun and a great way to spend an evening. Thanks!

My husband and I did this workshop last night...such a great evening and way to spend Valentine's day! Really enjoyed getting an introduction to a new skill all taught in a relaxed space by Kira, who is lovely, informative and makes the process easy to follow. Very excited with the pot and plate that we repaired!! Can highly recommend for something a little different. Thank you Kira!
