The workshop in detail

  • 15 years min.

  • Join Masuma Rahim for a full day workshop where you'll learn the art of woodturning and create your own bud vase and bowl. The day will begin with an introduction to Masuma and her brand, where she'll share her journey into woodturning, explain the inspiration behind her work and give you an overview of what to expect.

Next, Masuma will guide you through essential health and safety procedures to ensure you're comfortable and safe while working with the tools and equipment. You'll then familiarise yourself with the tools you'll be using as Masuma explains their purpose and demonstrates how to use them correctly.

You'll start the day by practising spindle turning on the lathe. Under Masuma's guidance you'll begin to develop your techniques, learn how to shape the wood and build your confidence. By the end of the morning you'll have created your own bud vase. After a break for lunch, you will return to the lathe in the afternoon, this time focusing on bowl turning.

Masuma will help you refine your techniques as you work on shaping your bowl. Once you've practised and gained more confidence, you'll move on to creating your final piece, the bowl. With Masuma's support, by the end of the workshop you'll have a solid understanding of woodturning and two handmade pieces!

    Wecandoo - Meet Masuma

    Meet Masuma

    Woodturner

Masuma Rahim didn't start her career as a wood turner, but she has always had a strong interest in working with her hands. Starting with metalwork at school, her interest in wood developed later at home, where she took on various DIY projects. This eventually led her to buy a lathe and teach herself how to turn wood.

As she improved her skills, Masuma established her brand, Urban Wood. Her work is influenced by her East African and Indian heritage and she focuses on creating practical, everyday pieces. She often uses rare woods such as mango wood, afromosia, padauk and beli to create her pieces.

Masuma is particularly interested in the way form, texture and the process of turning come together in her work. Her pieces are designed to reflect the connection between human and nature, showing how the natural variations of wood can be similar to the unpredictability of life.

Masuma's work has been exhibited at various galleries and festivals, including Handmade Oxford and Handmade Chelsea, where her pieces have gained attention and appreciation.
