Deep dive into straw marquetry over three sessions

These 3 sessions offer a deep-dive into the world of straw marquetry with your fantastic artisan host, to learn how to create a beautiful tray. Kim Jordan is renowned for his contemporary furniture designs, which use the straw marquetry art-form. This amazing craft is not widely known, so we are super excited to offer you this workshop to learn something totally unique! Straw marquetry is a traditional craft where thin strips of straw are cut, dyed, and arranged to create beautiful, geometrical designs. After softening the straw and dyeing it in various colours, the strips are glued onto surfaces in fun patterns. So this is your chance to learn how to create something beautiful in this traditional technique yourself.

This sessions take place over 3 consecutive Wednesdays, giving you a detailed insight to the craft. In your first session, Kim will introduce you to straw marquetry touching on it's amazing history, and why he feels so passionate about the art. You'll see examples and learn basic techniques under Kim's guidance as you prepare materials for your project. You will be able to go home and start thinking up some ideas for your tray design! 

In the second session, you'll focus on your design process. With Kim's help, you'll refine your ideas and sketch out your vision, making decisions on the pattern and colours you would like to use. Working with Kim, you'll begin to bring your creation to life, practicing the techniques and quickly improving your skills.

By the final session you'll be ready to create your own marquetry tray. You'll dive into the process and put your skills to the test. Before you know it, your creation will be ready to take home, and you can proudly show off your new gained skills. The final effect of these are really impressive, plus it's a mindful process to be able to create something with your own hands and really focus on something physical. Perfect for busy-bees who need to switch off and feel a sense of accomplishment.
